4th of July

July 4th begins
 with memories of the past,
 hopes for the future,
 and a struggle to grasp
 the meaning of mid-summer.

As we get older
 feelings become bitter-sweet
 and July 4th more precious
wondering where we'll be next year.

When darkness falls
 we all stare- up
 hoping to feel
 that magic again,
 or pretending to--
 our faces shimmering
 in the alternating multi-colored glow
 that expose dreams and fears
 leaving us wondering
if we should be somewhere else.

When the fireworks subside,
we catch ourselves thinking
of next July 4th, hoping we’ll be in a better place.
